The Science of Washing Nappies

The Science of Washing Nappies

by Amanda McCracken, with Jacqui Parncutt and Kirsten Randle.

With the advent of modern cloth nappies a new regime of eco-friendly laundering has come into being. No soaking, no bleach, no boiling water. Modern nappies don’t require all those things of the past! All sounds very well, but in many parts this has been taken to an extreme – gentle washing, cold water and minimal detergent. The result: smelly nappies that are deteriorating before they should.

As much as we want to believe that we can get away without chemicals or hot water, it goes against the laws of science and nature. Going against the laws of science in the laundry is like standing naked in the rain and expecting to get as clean as you would by scrubbing yourself with a soapy washcloth in a warm shower.

We must always remember that nappies are essentially our babies’ toilets for the first two years of their lives. We are not washing clothing which may have a bit of dirt or food marks, we are washing little toilets and trying to get them clean enough that our babies can wear their toilets, right next to their skin, over and over again.

Using science in the laundry.

There are four main factors to consider when trying to get your nappies clean.
1.Thermal Energy (water temperature)2. Water Softness (mineral content of the water)3. Mechanical Energy (agitation)4. Chemical Energy (detergent)

These four factors work together to help reduce the surface tension of water which in turn allows it to get into the fibres of the nappies an clean them. If you decrease one factor other factors will need to increase to compensate for that loss.

This explains why people in Adelaide with hard water will require more detergent than people in Melbourne, and why they have to scrub harder with a cake of soap in order to make bubbles.

Now here’s the kicker.

Urine has a lower surface tension than water which means that urine will soak into the fibres of the nappy more easily than water. Urine is made up of water, dissolved salts and urea and although sterile when in the bladder it begins to break down as soon as it comes into contact with bacteria; even the good bacteria that live on baby’s skin. If you don’t get it out as soon as possible it will start to break down the fibres of the nappies – creating smells and holes.

In order to get nappies clean we need to wash out the urea and salts from the nappies. To do this we need to dilute the urine many times over using water with a lowered surface tension so that it will remove the urea and salt particles from the nappies.

The other half of the dirty nappy equation is soiled nappies! If you don’t use flushable liners you’ll be squirting or flushing the solids down the toilet. Whatever method you use, you will still have very dirty nappies that contain enormous amounts of bacteria. Thus a thorough cleaning regime is essential.

How to wash nappies

Wash early, wash often. Like any laundering; nappies will be cleaner if they are washed soon after they become dirty. The urine has less chance to eat away at the fabric, the bacteria has less chance to breed, and any stains that may arise from soiling have less time to set. Most importantly, this is not the time to skimp on water as nothing else you wash in the laundry will ever be as unclean or as bacteria ridden as your nappies – remember they are your little one’s toilet until they are toilet trained.

  1. Dry-pail. This is still a good idea from a practicality and safety point of view. A) No Heavy Lifting involved and B) No Drowning Risks to young infants. You’ll get a better result if you give your nappies a quick rinse under the tap before popping in the bucket.

  1. Prerinse. This step should be done with cold water and no detergent. The aim of this step is to try to remove much of the urine and bacteria from the nappy - so we need less detergent to get the nappies clean in the next step. It also helps to prevent build up of detergent and the cold water will help to stop stains from setting.

  1. The wash. This is where you need to contrate on getting the combination of water temperature, softness v hardness, mechanical energy and detergent right. Now while you might not have a lot of control over your water softness or hardness, you can control the three other factors. You don’t always need hot water, and it may damage other parts of your modern cloth nappies such as the elastic or plastic components, but you may need to hot wash occassionally. If you use cold water, you will need to compensate by using more detergent. So a balance is best. Warm water with an appropriate amount of detergent and a wash on the longest cycle.

So which detergent is best? We recommend a non-purfumed, enzyme free, optical whitening free, phosphate free concentrate or an ultra-concentrate. You want the best bang for your buck – the most bubbles for your scoop. As many babies can show reactions to detergents, you want the least amount of fillers – as small traces may remain on the fabric, even after a final rinse.

  1. Final rinse. This is to remove as much of the detergent residue as possible – so as to reduce the risk of skin irritation of your little one’s behind.

  1. Line Dry. The sun will provide you with lots of lovely UV rays that will kill bacteria and assist in sterilising your nappies. Great news for Queenslanders! Not such great news for southerners in winter, although many of us can make do. As most nappies have PUL in them we advise drying your nappies inside out so that the UV rays get to the part of the nappy that will come in contact with your baby’s skin. Drying on a clothes airer inside is fine, but longer drying times can be associated with bacterial growth and smells. Placing your airer near a window will expose your nappies to UV rays even when it’s overcast and raining.

If your nappies smell it is likely you have a cleanliness problem, that is, you are not washing the urine and bacteria out of all the layers of your nappy. In this situation you need to work on lowering your surface tension of the water so that it will clean your nappies properly, by changing your thermal and/or chemical energies.

The extras

  • Hot water – This has a lower surface tension than cold or warm water meaning that it gets into the fibres of the nappies and cleans them more easily as well as killing many bacteria. Hot water may decrease the lifespan of PUL and elastic but it does have the advantage over chemicals that it won’t leave a residue that could cause irritation to baby’s skin.
  • Anti-bacterial rinses - These will help to sterilise the nappies and once more will help to lower the water surface tension – resulting in cleaner nappies. They are recommended after gastro, thrush, live vaccinations and a bad case of nappy rash. Also handy in winter if you aren’t getting enough UV rays from the sun to sterilise your nappies.
  • Nappy Sanitisers – Like the anti-bacterial rinses – these use chemical energy to both kill bacteria and to lower water surfact tension. The active ingredient breaks down in water to a water softener and hydrogen peroxide – which will further break down to water and oxygen. Often cotain optical whiteners and enzymes which may cause rash. Rinse well.
  • Vinegar – can be used to lower the pH of the nappies caused by detergent residue. In theory if the rinse is thorough enough it shouldn’t be necessary, but it won’t hurt your nappies – as the concentration of the acid in vinegar (roughly 4%) is not strong enough to eat away at elastic as some people claim. You should always rinse with water after a vinegar rinse to wash away any residue.
  • Dryer - isn’t such a great idea because it deteriorates elastic and PUL in your modern nappies as well as using enormous amounts of electricity. If you do use it you will need to use it on a hot enough setting to prevent bacterial growth, since you are omitting the sterilising step that the sun performs.

Most of us who use modern cloth nappies do so because we want to reduce our footprint. We want to live eco-conscious lives, lower our impact on our environment. But this does not mean we can wish science away. Warm and hot water, detergent and chemical solutions need not be the enemies. They can help us get longer wear out of our nappies and make those years that we have little ones in nappies a pleasant, satisfying experience.

Birthday Celeb at Chelsea Serendra

My Sil celebrated her birthday at Chelsea Serendra last last week. She mostly lets us decide what to eat because she is a vegetarian.

The bread is complementary and it came out warm. My MIL love the baked garlic, she said it was tasty and ate it whole! haha!

The Croquette are yummy and full of flavour. I love the dip that came with it.

This one was sooo flavorful and yet soooo sinful! haha! Super crispy skin and super soft pork meat! It came with a hefty price tag. I guess it was justified with the taste! LOL! Cholesterol here I come! haha!

I don't know what the taste of the salad was because for now I can't eat fresh greens outside. But my SIL said it was super fresh and the taste is balance.

Roast chicken was just ok. It was tough but nevertheless has the right amount of flavor.

This pasta dish is what we are raving about. This has a hint of truffle oil that's why it came out yummy! I could ate it all by myself if it was given to me! haha!

As you can see I took the pictures after they already taken each a slice. LOL! That's goes without saying that the pizaa was that good! haha!

My cute handsome son and his dad by the fountain. Can't resist taking their picture! I love to take pictures of my son. Someday he will grow and I would like to remember him as this cute handsome little boy.

A date at Crystal Jade

My hubby and I went on a lunch date at Crystal Jade in Greenhills before proceeding to a Baby Shower Event at Medela's House. We ordered sweet and sour soup and have it served in 2 bowls. It was so yummy even without black vinegar.

Next we ordered the cold duck. It was just okay for an appetizer.

This was the Yang chow fried rice. Love it. Over sa cabbage but still yummy.

Of course we wouldn't forget to order their famous pork siao long pao! Sarap! very soupy sa loob.

The BBQ pork was just so so. not so tender though a little tough.

The best lemon chicken I tasted so far here in Manila! Crispy skin yet tender. The lemon was not over powering too! Just cooked right. Would love to order it again!

Lemonade for me to quenched my thirst.

Coke Zero for the hubby.

Overall, experience was great and the staff are attentive. Fast service and reliable. Would love to go back for more of their lemon chicken! Yummy talaga!

Habagat rains flood waters everywhere!

I've not been blogging for a week now because of the calamity that befall us. It's a disaster really, but at least all of us are safe, including our maids.

It started when the rains won't stop and flood waters are going up faster than I could pack eveything. That was monday night. My husband began panicking and ordering us to pack my son's clothes and mine in one bag and haul us to his uncle's house. He then left us there and went back to our house to stand guard. In about 5am, tuesday morning, the flood waters began to rise again and it reach his waist. He and his brother began bringing all three refrigirators upstairs plus all the dogs, then evacuated the house.

Come wednesday, the flood waters finally went down before noon. My hubby, our driver, one boy and 2 maids went home to start cleaning. Hay grabe, until now, it's already saturday, we are all still cleaning. I'm not complaining but seeing them having a hard time to clean all the mess and especially my husband just breaks my heart.

Enough said, I'm still grateful that we all are safe. That's what is important right now. Just wishing we won't experience it again and again..

Breastfeeding at Public

When I decided to breastfeed my son, I came prepared. I went to seminars and search the internet topics and things to buy. I also wanted to know how would I breastfeed him in public, kasi gala kami! haha!

I was toying to the fact that I could bring only my son, some clothes and diapers when going out. No hassle of bringing hot water, cold water, formula milk and tons of bottles. I'm a light packer even when I was just a teenager. I already learned that from my dad! LOL! He was a heavy packer, if he could only bring everything in his kitchen he would do so! hahaha! Then he would bear the consequences of carrying heavy things, plus the people around him! Hay..

Anyway, I only bought a nursing cover to cover me with when my son was going to feed. I knew there were stares.. But what the "H".. My son is hungry and I'm his feeding machine. Hahaha! Besides, my hubby was there beside me, I know anyone that would try to insult me will not get away with it. hihi! But sometimes, I also went to the Comfort room, provided it is clean, the breastfeeding room of a mall or even the dressing room. I only have to ask the sales lady for it. If all else fail, I sit at the corner of a restaurant, order something to drink and wear my nursing cover and feed my son. Very very convenient! =)

My son at 6 mos. (SG 2011)

When we went to Singapore, my son was about 6 months old. I breastfeed him during walking at orchard road at night and even in the MTR. Wearing of course my nursing cover. Maybe I don't give any much thoughts of others might think. I won't see them anyway after our vacation! haha!

With the right mindset, I believe that everyone can breastfeed. Why shy away with it? It is the best thing we could offer our children. If we want to preserve our boobs image, we could do that after breastfeeding. Go to Belo or any cosmetic surgery for that! haha! Just sharing my thoughts. I don't judge people who did not breastfeed their son and even people who bottle feed their son until 9 yrs old. So please do not stare at us who breastfeed in public. Just saying.

Citibank did it again! 50% off on Nike, Addidas, etc!

I received an email last week regarding the sale of Citibank offering 50% off on Nike, Addidas, Cole Haan etc in partnership with Sm. I was not planning to go because it would only mean expenses! Haha! But when my husband told me his rubber shoes was missing and he got aches when running using different shoes, I decided to tell him about it. It was a perfect opportunity to buy a running shoes without the hefty price tag! And of course a perfect excuse for me to shop! LOL!

Citibank offered their cardholders exclusive 1st 3 hours access inside, from 4pm to 7pm only and installments for 3 mos. for a minimum purchase of Php5,000. Not baaaad! Bad for my wallet though! haha!

The sale was located at SM Megamall, megatrade hall 1 and 2. At first, I thought my hubby would not like to go because he didn't really love going to megamall. But sayang ang sale and he really needs a running shoes. So off we went and got there at about 5pm.

There was not so many people yet, although the most crowded aisle was Nike.

Happy Feet Php499.00 Original Price at 1k plus

New Balance Women Php2,548.00 Original Price 5k plus

Socks at Php120 - 229.75 (Not on Sale)

I got myself one pair of slippers from Happy feet and one pair of running shoes from New Balance. Also got some socks for me and my son, although these were not on sale.

Timberland Php3,499.30 Original Price 5k plus

New Balance Php2,598.00 Original price 5k plus

We already need them anyway. My hubby bought one pair from Timberland and one pair from New Balance.

Cole Haan Php4,920.00 Original Price 12k plus

New Balance Php2,558 Original Price 5k plus

While my BIL also went there because his office was only a few blocks away bought also one pair from Cole Haan and one pair from New Balance.

My MIL never bougth anything. She's not a fan of rubber shoes, although there are lots of slip-in sandals and slippers, these are not that pretty and already out-dated. There are also bags and some luggages that were on sale.

Upon seeing that it was already 7pm, the long line that was already forming outside was suddenly rushing inside! horror! hahaha! Ang daming tao agad! I told my hubby to decide at once and to pay already. It's becoming stuffy and crowded na! hahaha! Till the next sale! =))
